Hit ’Em Up

The harmony of 'Hit 'Em Up' is deliberately minimal—a looping replayed sample that provides a dark, unchanging foundation. This is entirely by design: the track's power comes from vocal delivery, lyrical content, and rhythmic aggression rather than harmonic sophistication. The static E minor loop creates claustrophobic tension that never releases, perfectly serving the song's function as an unrelenting verbal attack. The production philosophy is quintessential Death Row–era West Coast hip-hop: let the groove hypnotize while the MC dominates.

2Pac wrote 'Hit 'Em Up' as a direct response to the Notorious B.I.G.'s 'Who Shot Ya?,' which Shakur believed was a taunt referencing his November 30, 1994 shooting at Quad Recording Studios in New York. Fueled by the conviction that Biggie and Sean 'Puffy' Combs had prior knowledge of or involvement in the ambush, Shakur channeled his rage into lyrics that named and attacked nearly every major figure on Bad Boy Records. He recruited members of the former group Dramacydal—Hussein Fatal, Yaki Kadafi, and E.D.I. Mean—who together formed the original Outlawz lineup, each contributing a verse to the five-part onslaught.

Released as a B-side to 'How Do U Want It' in June 1996, 'Hit 'Em Up' channeled 2Pac's genuine fury over his 1994 shooting into five verses of scorched-earth verbal warfare against Biggie, Puffy, and East Coast hip-hop. Produced by Johnny 'J' over a replayed bassline from Dennis Edwards' 'Don't Look Any Further,' the track became the defining salvo of the East Coast–West Coast rivalry and is universally regarded as one of the greatest diss records ever made.
