What's Up?

The harmony of 'What's Up?' is remarkably minimal — just three chords (A, Bm, D) cycling in the same I–ii–IV–I pattern from start to finish. The progression deliberately avoids the dominant (V) chord entirely, creating a sense of perpetual motion without traditional resolution. All the song's dramatic arc comes from dynamics, vocal intensity, and arrangement rather than chord changes — a testament to how powerful simplicity can be when paired with a commanding vocal performance.

The song originated well before 4 Non Blondes formed as a band. Linda Perry wrote it during her early days as a struggling musician working as a waitress in San Francisco. Third Eye Blind frontman Stephan Jenkins later recalled sitting in a room with Perry, both performing their original compositions to one another — Perry played early versions of 'What's Up?' while Jenkins shared what would become 'Semi-Charmed Life.' Decades later, Jenkins reflected that the songs shared in that private session would go on to sell a combined 17 million records.

Released in 1993 by 4 Non Blondes, "What's Up?" became one of the decade's most recognizable rock anthems with its explosive chorus and Linda Perry's passionate vocal delivery.
