The contrast between the restrained verse (natural minor i-VI-iv) and the expansive chorus (introducing the parallel major IV and harmonic minor V) creates the cinematic sweep that defines the song. In early 2011, Sony Pictures President of Music Lia Vollack suggested Adele to Eon Productions as the ideal voice for the next Bond theme, citing her soulful, haunting quality reminiscent of classic Shirley Bassey recordings. Initially hesitant because her songs were personal, Adele met with director Sam Mendes, who told her to simply write a personal song, using Carly Simon's 'Nobody Does It Better' as inspiration. After reading the film's script, Adele called it a 'no-brainer' and enlisted producer Paul Epworth. The first draft was written in just 10 minutes.
