Jerry Cantrell wrote 'No Excuses' as part of the creative sessions that produced the entire Jar of Flies EP — Alice in Chains' most acoustic and introspective work to date. The song centres on a simple but effective major chord movement with ringing open strings, showcasing Cantrell's melodic instincts rather than the down-tuned heaviness of the band's prior record Dirt.

Released as the lead single from the acoustic EP Jar of Flies in January 1994, 'No Excuses' stripped away Alice in Chains' heavy distortion to reveal an unexpectedly bright, R.E.M.-influenced songcraft. Written entirely by guitarist Jerry Cantrell, it became the band's first No. 1 on Billboard's Album Rock Tracks chart, spending 26 weeks on the chart.
