Wake Me Up

The harmonic structure is a variation of the common vi-IV-I-V progression in D major, but it is firmly rooted in B minor. By starting on the i chord and utilizing the VII (subtonic) rather than a V (dominant F#), Avicii blends folk-like modal simplicity with the driving energy of dance music. This 'four-chord loop' is functional yet atmospheric, allowing the rhythmic acoustic guitar and the lead synth melody to provide the necessary dynamic shifts without needing complex chord changes.

The song was a collaboration between Avicii, Mike Einziger of Incubus, and soul singer Aloe Blacc. Avicii reached out to Einziger to experiment with a fusion of folk and electronic music. They met at Einziger's home studio and developed the acoustic guitar progression. Aloe Blacc was invited to join the session later and wrote the lyrics in about two hours, using phrases he had previously jotted down in a notebook.

Released in 2013, 'Wake Me Up' redefined the EDM landscape by blending Mike Einziger's organic acoustic guitar with Aloe Blacc's soulful vocals and Avicii's signature synth production. It remains one of the most successful crossover hits in history, bridging the gap between traditional songwriting and festival culture.
