Max Martin and Andreas Carlsson wrote 'I Want It That Way' at Cheiron Studios in Stockholm. When the Backstreet Boys arrived in Stockholm in November 1998 for a two-week recording session, they were presented with a demo that initially consisted only of the main chorus. The vocals were completed in just two days before the band left Sweden on November 16, 1998. Originally, 'Larger Than Life' was intended to be the lead single following the upbeat formula of their first two albums, but after hearing the final version, the group pushed for the mid-tempo ballad instead.
