Formation's harmony is deliberately minimal, drawing from trap and bounce production traditions where rhythm and bass take precedence over harmonic complexity. The song sits almost entirely on a D minor tonic, with sparse chord movement serving as a platform for Beyoncé's rhythmic vocal delivery and the track's powerful lyrical content. This harmonic austerity amplifies the directness of the message.

The creation of "Formation" began in Atlanta when producer Pluss crafted the original beat using a synthesizer effect from an FL Studio VST plug-in. In April 2014, Mike Will Made It and the members of Rae Sremmurd were driving to Coachella, freestyling over beats in the car. When Pluss's beat played, Swae Lee spontaneously rapped the line "Okay ladies, now let's get in formation." Mike Will loved the concept and believed it could become a major female empowerment anthem in the vein of Beyoncé's "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)." They recorded the line as a voice note and later developed it into a reference track in a Los Angeles studio. Mike Will sent the beat and reference along with several other tracks to Beyoncé, who wrote the verses and transformed it into a deeply personal statement on black Southern identity.

Surprise-released in February 2016 as the lead single from Lemonade, "Formation" fuses trap production with New Orleans bounce to deliver a defiant anthem of black pride and cultural empowerment. The song became a cultural flashpoint, earning six MTV VMA wins, a Grammy for Best Music Video, and recognition as one of the greatest songs of the 2010s.
