Mark Hoppus developed 'What's My Age Again?' accidentally while sitting on the floor of his kitchen/living room in San Diego, California. He was attempting to learn the intro to 'J.A.R.' by Green Day, but his fumbled version of the riff became the seed for something new. Though he initially treated it as a vulgar joke, he recognized its potential as a real song and claimed it took him only five minutes to write. He brought it to the band during a two-week rehearsal block booked at DML Studios in Escondido, California, to write material for what would become Enema of the State. Newly arrived drummer Travis Barker and guitarist Tom DeLonge found the composition agreeable and helped develop it further in the rehearsal space.

Released in April 1999 as the lead single from Enema of the State, 'What's My Age Again?' propelled blink-182 from cult pop-punk act to mainstream phenomenon. Mark Hoppus wrote the song accidentally in five minutes while fumbling through a Green Day riff, pairing a deceptively catchy arpeggiated guitar intro with lyrics about perpetual immaturity. Its nude-running music video dominated MTV rotation and the track cemented blink-182 as the defining voice of late-90s pop-punk.
