24K Magic

The harmony of '24K Magic' is deliberately minimal — a hallmark of funk production where rhythm, texture, and groove take precedence over harmonic complexity. The i7–iv7 vamp in F minor provides an endlessly loopable groove foundation, while the chorus's brief excursion to the relative major (D♭–A♭) creates just enough harmonic contrast to feel like a payoff. This approach directly echoes 1980s synth-funk and electro, where artists like Zapp and Cameo built entire tracks on one or two chords. The minor-key tonality gives the party anthem an underlying coolness and edge that distinguishes it from straightforward major-key pop.

After the worldwide success of 'Uptown Funk' with Mark Ronson in 2014, Bruno Mars retreated to the studio to begin work on his third album. He had seven songs recorded by mid-2016 but delayed the release to accommodate his Super Bowl halftime appearance. Mars, Philip Lawrence, and Christopher Brody Brown — working under their collective alias Shampoo Press & Curl — wrote '24K Magic' as an invitation to a party, blending 1980s synth-funk with modern production. The Stereotypes, who had known Mars since 2007 but drifted apart after his Atlantic signing, reconnected with him in 2015. Producer Jonathan Yip sent beats that caught Mars's attention, and Mars invited the group to help finish the track, asking them to add 'seasoning' with a specific tempo and key.

Released as the lead single from his 2016 album of the same name, '24K Magic' is Bruno Mars's love letter to synth-funk, disco, and the glamorous excess of the party lifestyle. The track won Record of the Year at the 2018 Grammys, peaked at number four on the Billboard Hot 100, and cemented Mars as modern pop's most convincing retro revivalist.
