Chris de Burgh wrote 'Lady in Red' as a personal tribute to his wife Diane. On the British TV series 'This Is Your Life', he explained that the song was inspired by the memory of first seeing Diane — and by the observation that men so often cannot even remember what their wives were wearing when they first met. The song was his way of proving that he remembered.
