The harmony in 'Dirrty' is deliberately minimal — Rockwilder's production centers on a driving minor loop rather than chord movement. This is a genre-specific choice: in hip-hop production of this era, the beat and the performance are the primary carriers of intensity, and a static minor foundation gives both Aguilera's vocals and Redman's verses room to work without harmonic competition.

Aguilera had grown increasingly frustrated with the image RCA had imposed on her since her 1999 debut — she later described it to The Sydney Morning Herald as 'cookie-cutter' and 'almost virginal.' The turning point came at a club where she heard Redman's 2001 single 'Let's Get Dirty (I Can't Get in da Club)' and immediately turned to Rockwilder, who had already collaborated with her on 'Lady Marmalade.' As Rockwilder later recalled, she leapt across the table and told him to make her a song like that. The result was co-written by Aguilera, Rockwilder, Redman, Jasper Cameron, and Balewa Muhammad, and was among the last tracks recorded for Stripped.

The lead single from Stripped, 'Dirrty' placed Aguilera squarely in hip-hop territory — co-produced by Rockwilder and featuring Redman's rap verses, it was a frontal rejection of the bubblegum pop image RCA had built around her since 1999. David LaChapelle's video, depicting mud wrestling and muscle worshipping, was as provocative as the track itself. The single topped the charts in the UK and Ireland and proved Aguilera could own a rap collaboration as convincingly as a ballad.
