Sailing

Sailing is a masterclass in 'West Coast' or 'Yacht Rock' harmony. Its distinctiveness lies in the avoidance of the traditional V-I dominant resolution in favor of 'soft' modal interchange (bVII) and pedal points that create a sense of weightlessness. The modulation from A Major to C Major is remarkably smooth despite the distant relationship, achieved through the common-tone pivot and the use of the Fmaj7 chord, which feels like a 'borrowed' bVI in A but functions as a IV in the new key of C. The orchestration—specifically the acoustic piano and electric piano layering—enhances the lushness of the Major 9th chords.

Christopher Cross wrote the song as a tribute to his friendship with Al Glasscock, an older friend from high school who acted as a surrogate older brother. Glasscock would take Cross sailing during his teenage years to help him escape the trials and tribulations of adolescence.

Released in 1979, 'Sailing' is a multi-Grammy-winning classic that defined the smooth 'West Coast' sound. As one of the first major hits recorded digitally, it remains an archetype of sophisticated late-70s production and melodic tranquility.
