Magic's harmony is deceptively simple — four diatonic chords arranged in two classic pop configurations. The choice of Db major gives the song a warm, enveloping tonality that distinguishes it from guitar-friendly sharp keys. "Magic" was written during a deeply personal period for frontman Chris Martin, as Coldplay shifted their creative direction toward a more intimate and electronic sound for their sixth album. The song emerged from sessions where the band experimented with stripped-back arrangements and synthesizer textures, departing from the anthemic stadium rock of their previous album Mylo Xyloto. All four band members are credited as writers, reflecting the collaborative nature of the Ghost Stories sessions.
