Fogerty wanted the music to inhabit the same uncomplicated, wide-open world as the lyric. John Fogerty wrote the song for his then three-year-old son Josh, filling the lyrics with the kind of colorful, nonsensical imagery a toddler might dream up — tambourine-playing elephants, a giant dinosaur doing the do, a flying spoon. Years of speculation that the imagery was drug-coded prompted Fogerty to address it directly in interviews: the song had nothing to do with drugs. He cited Dr. Seuss's And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street as the spark for the parade that runs through the lyric, and the song's opening and closing reference to Illinois — locking the front door to keep troubles from following him home — sets a domestic, protective frame around the fantasy.

Released in July 1970 as the lead single from Cosmo's Factory, 'Lookin' Out My Back Door' reached #2 on the US Billboard Hot 100 — blocked by Diana Ross's 'Ain't No Mountain High Enough' — and hit #1 on Cash Box, making it CCR's only Cash Box chart-topper. Fogerty wrote the whimsical, image-packed lyric for his three-year-old son Josh, drawing on Dr. Seuss for the parade imagery and delivering it over a bright, acoustic-tinged arrangement that stands apart from the band's usual swamp-rock territory. It topped the charts in Australia, Austria, Canada, Norway, and Sweden.
