Ashes to Ashes

On paper, the underlying changes are a spare major-key framework in F, but the song's harmonic identity is almost entirely a product of texture and timbre. Visconti's flanged piano, Hammer's symphonic guitar-synthesiser layers, Alomar's reggae-tinged guitar, and Murray's funk bassline collectively push a simple I–IV–V palette into genuinely strange sonic territory. The progression supports rather than drives the song — the production is the harmony.

Bowie wrote 'Ashes to Ashes' during the sessions for Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps) in early 1980, initially under the working title 'People Are Turning to Gold'. Lyrically, he returned to Major Tom — the fictional astronaut from 'Space Oddity' — as a way of processing his own cocaine addiction throughout the 1970s. Where the 1969 song framed Major Tom as a romantic escapist, 'Ashes to Ashes' finds him a strung-out junkie drifting alone in space.

Released on 1 August 1980 as the lead single from Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps), 'Ashes to Ashes' hit No. 1 on the UK Singles Chart — Bowie's second chart-topper — and redefined what a pop music video could be. The song fuses new wave rhythms with art rock atmosphere, lyrically revisiting the Major Tom character from 'Space Oddity' (1969) eleven years later, now a junkie adrift in space. Its co-directed video, featuring solarised colour and four members of London's Blitz club, catalysed the emerging New Romantic movement and set a new industry benchmark for visual ambition.
