Bowie wrote 'Starman' in early 1972 as a replacement track for the nearly completed Ziggy Stardust album. The original running order included a cover of Chuck Berry's 'Round and Round,' but RCA urged Bowie to include an obvious single with stronger commercial appeal. Bowie composed 'Starman' quickly, crafting a sci-fi narrative that fit perfectly within the Ziggy Stardust concept — an alien rock star who acts as a messenger of hope for disaffected youth.
