God’s Plan

The harmony of "God's Plan" is deliberately minimal — a single two-chord loop (Am7–Bm7) repeated throughout the entire track. This ♭VII–i motion in B minor creates a gentle, rocking quality that avoids traditional dominant-function tension. The seventh-chord voicings add warmth without complexity, and the lack of harmonic movement places all the musical interest on Drake's vocal melody, rhythmic delivery, and the layered trap production. This approach exemplifies the modern hip-hop philosophy of using harmonic stasis as a canvas for vocal and textural expression.

Originally titled "Grace of God," the song originated from a series of beats sent to Drake in September 2017. Producer Cardo created the instrumental using FL Studio and VSTs, and when Drake heard it, he called Cardo to say "We got one." The track was later given to Boi-1da in a half-finished state; Drake requested a more "bouncy vibe," and Boi-1da added additional drums to achieve that feel. The song was first teased at a New York New Year's Eve party on January 1, 2018, and originally featured a verse from rapper Trippie Redd, who had been discussing the collaboration since October 2017.

Released in January 2018, "God's Plan" became one of the defining songs of the late 2010s, debuting at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and breaking first-day streaming records on both Apple Music and Spotify. Its sparse trap production by Cardo, Boi-1da, and Noah "40" Shebib frames Drake's introspective lyrics about destiny and fame, while the charitable music video cemented its cultural moment.
