Shape of You is a masterclass in minimalist pop harmony. It utilizes a static 4-chord loop (i-iv-VI-bVII) that remains unchanged throughout the entire track. By strictly adhering to the Aeolian mode and avoiding a major V chord (G#), Sheeran creates a 'non-resolving' harmonic circle. This lack of a traditional V-i cadence allows the focus to remain on the syncopated marimba-led rhythm and melodic variations.
