The saxophone riff by Jeff Bass adds melodic sophistication without increasing harmonic complexity, creating a deceptively catchy framework that supports Eminem's densely packed lyrical flow.

Eminem and Jeff Bass began working on the track during a late-night recording session in the summer of 2001. DJ Head supplied a pre-recorded drum track, and Bass experimented with keyboard sounds until he landed on a bass-guitar effect that locked in with the beat. Bass repeated two notes over the loop, prompting Eminem to vocalize what became the song's melody, which Bass then re-recorded on saxophone. The music was written and tracked in roughly thirty minutes, wrapping at 3:00 AM. Eminem returned with the finished lyrics about three months later.

Released in 2002 as the lead single from The Eminem Show, 'Without Me' is Eminem's self-aware victory lap—a spiritual sequel to 'The Real Slim Shady' that lampoons politicians, pop stars, and his own controversies over one of hip-hop's most recognizable productions.
