My Immortal

The harmony of 'My Immortal' is deliberately spare — a rotating four-chord diatonic pattern that keeps all emotional focus on the vocal and lyrical narrative. The central tension between A major and F-sharp minor creates a tonal ambiguity that never resolves into pure brightness or pure darkness, mirroring a lyrical subject trapped between grief and release. "My Immortal" was written by Amy Lee and Ben Moody when both were around 15 years old. Moody wrote the lyrics from a work of fiction, Lee composed the music on piano, and Lee later added the bridge. The earliest known demo was a home recording from approximately 1997 featuring only Lee's vocals and piano with slightly different lyrics. It was slated for the 1998 Evanescence EP but cut before release; a refined version appeared on the band's 2000 demo album, Origin, and a further version on the 2003 EP Mystary.

"My Immortal" is Evanescence's most emotionally stripped-back ballad, pairing Amy Lee's soaring vocals with sparse piano and sweeping orchestral strings to devastating effect. Released in December 2003 as the third single from Fallen, it reached number seven on the US Billboard Hot 100 and topped charts in Canada, Greece, and Portugal. Rooted in gothic rock but built for pop crossover, it remains one of the defining power ballads of the decade.
