Heinz Meier composed the melody in 1965, with Hans Bradtke supplying German lyrics under the title 'Der Sommerwind.' The song uses the sirocco — the hot wind that sweeps from North Africa into Southern Europe at summer's end — as a metaphor for seasonal change and the passage of time. Johnny Mercer heard Danish singer Grethe Ingmann perform the song and rewrote the lyrics into English, preserving Bradtke's thematic framework. The rewrite became Mercer's final composition to reach the American top forty.
