The harmony of "Patience" achieves remarkable emotional depth through fundamentally simple means. Built on open acoustic guitar chords accessible to beginners, the progression's sophistication lies in its use of the secondary dominant A major, which lifts the harmony out of pure diatonic territory and creates an unexpected brightness in the verse. The bridge's descending bass line (G–F#–E) provides the song's most poignant harmonic moment, perfectly underscoring the emotional vulnerability of the lyrics. According to bassist Duff McKagan, Axl Rose conceived the core idea for "Patience" seemingly out of nowhere, developing both the story and melody that would become the song's foundation. The composition was a collaborative effort credited to all five members of the classic lineup: Axl Rose, Slash, Izzy Stradlin, Duff McKagan, and Steven Adler.

Released as a single from G N' R Lies in 1989, "Patience" stripped away the electric fury of Guns N' Roses to reveal a heartfelt acoustic ballad built on whistling, three acoustic guitars, and Axl Rose's vulnerable vocal delivery.
