Harmonically, 'Natural' is built on deliberate simplicity — a single four-chord minor loop with no modulation, no borrowed chords, and no dominant resolution. What distinguishes it is not harmonic complexity but production craft: Mattman & Robin stack synths, dynamics, and rhythmic density over an otherwise bare framework. The modal-minor loop places it in a lineage of anthemic alternative rock that treats harmonic stasis as emotional momentum rather than a limitation.

Dan Reynolds, Wayne Sermon, Ben McKee, and Daniel Platzman wrote 'Natural' with Swedish production duo Robin Fredriksson and Mattias Larsson (Mattman & Robin) and pop songwriter Justin Tranter. The session followed the collaborative model the band had used on earlier singles — pairing the core group with outside writers who brought melodic shaping and production architecture Tranter and Mattman & Robin were known for in that period.

Released July 2018 as the lead single from Origins, 'Natural' arrived with survival-of-the-fittest imagery wrapped around a relentless minor-key groove. Seven credited writers — including all four band members, Justin Tranter, and Swedish duo Mattman & Robin — fused melodic directness with cinematic scale. The song crossed quickly from radio into major sports and gaming contexts, cementing its status as one of Imagine Dragons' most-heard tracks from their second decade.
