Full musical analysis
The song's harmony is built on a repetitive four-bar loop typical of R&B-influenced pop from the early 2010s. It uses a pure Aeolian (natural minor) scale, eschewing the harmonic minor's leading tone. This creates a 'cool' and 'slick' atmosphere that doesn't demand resolution, allowing the syncopated percussion and Justin Bieber's vocal melodies to drive the song's energy. The harmonic simplicity provides a stable foundation for Chance the Rapper's more rhythmically complex guest verse.

It marked a stylistic shift for Bieber toward a more mature R&B and hip-hop sound.
