Applause

The harmony in 'Applause' is built to disappear into the production. A four-chord minor loop with a subtonic close replaces any harmonic development; the track never modulates or resolves into the tonic with a V–i cadence. This is standard hi-NRG and Eurodance practice — rhythmic momentum and arrangement density carry the listener through, not harmonic narrative. The song's identity lives in texture, vocal phrasing, and the sheer volume of the drop, not in the chords underneath.

Gaga wrote 'Applause' with DJ White Shadow, Nick Monson, and Dino Zisis while touring the Born This Way Ball in 2012. Additional songwriters — Martin Bresso, Nicolas Mercier, Julien Arias, and William Grigahcine — also contributed to the track. Up to fifty songs were drafted for Artpop during that period; this one landed because it named something concrete: the nightly ritual of walking onstage while physically unraveling. Gaga told Sirius XM Radio that she would go on in tears, dizzy with pain, but the sound of the crowd pulled her through every night until she physically could not continue.

Released August 12, 2013 as the lead single from Artpop, 'Applause' was Gaga's first music in over a year — and her answer to the hip surgery that had sidelined her mid-tour. Built on synthesizers and hi-NRG beats that fuse electropop, dance-pop, and Eurodance, the track makes a philosophical argument: the crowd's response is not just feedback, it is the fuel.
