Stupid Love

The harmony is intentionally uncomplicated — four diatonic Mixolydian chords cycling over a 118 BPM four-on-the-floor pulse. The track's energy lives in production layering and Gaga's vocal register (A♭3 to F5) rather than in harmonic movement. The persistent A♭ (♭VII) separates it from standard I-IV-V pop and connects it to house music's longstanding preference for flattened-seventh color, an influence Tchami's involvement would naturally reinforce.

BloodPop first played the instrumental for Gaga at the Kansas City, Missouri stop of her Joanne World Tour while both were working on material for A Star Is Born (2018). None of those sessions produced anything for the film's soundtrack, but 'Stupid Love' survived. BloodPop felt the demo 'was missing something' and brought in Max Martin — the first collaboration between Gaga and Martin. Gaga was initially reluctant; she prefers to write and produce on her own terms. She ultimately sang over BloodPop's track, sent the vocal to Martin, who returned notes; Gaga rewrote the lyrics, returned to the booth, and the final recording was captured that same day.

The lead single from Chromatica (2020), 'Stupid Love' runs at 118 BPM in B♭ Mixolydian with a four-on-the-floor pulse built by BloodPop, Tchami, and Max Martin — the first time Gaga and Martin ever worked together. It debuted at number one in Hungary, Scotland, and El Salvador and went top ten across more than fifteen countries, including the United States and United Kingdom.
