The harmony of 'You and I' is defined by its synthesis of 1970s arena rock and contemporary pop production. By utilizing the bVII chord (G major in the key of A), Gaga taps into a Mixolydian soundscape common in Queen's discography. The progression avoids the traditional V-I authentic cadence in favor of the IV-I plagal cadence and the bVII-IV-I 'rock' cadence, which gives the track its gritty, grounded character. This harmonic structure supports the song's Americana aesthetic, moving away from the electronic-heavy diatonicism of her earlier work.

Lady Gaga wrote the song in New York while playing her old piano. She first performed the track in June 2010 at Elton John's White Tie and Tiara Ball. Although she initially described it as a 'rock-and-roll tune' that was unlikely to be a single, the positive online response to her performance footage led her to add it to the setlist of The Monster Ball Tour and eventually include it on her second studio album.
