The 'glittering' piano timbre — bright, staccato, almost music-box-like — contrasts with the heavy sub-bass and sparse hi-hats, creating a sonic signature that is instantly recognizable. Lizzo co-wrote 'Truth Hurts' with Jesse Saint John and producers Steven 'Tele' Cheung and Ricky Reed. The song channels raw emotions about a failed relationship into a brash declaration of self-worth, famously opening with the now-iconic line about taking a DNA test. During a 2019 concert in her native Detroit, Lizzo revealed that the person she wrote the song about was from Detroit.
