Solar Power relies on a cyclic three-chord structure that eschews the standard V (dominant) chord in favor of the bVII (subtonic). This specific I-bVII-IV progression creates a sense of continuous forward motion without the tension-and-release typical of functional diatonic harmony. The arrangement draws heavily from the production style of George Michael's 'Freedom! '90' and Primal Scream's 'Loaded', using the Mixolydian mode to evoke a relaxed, outdoor atmosphere. The lack of a leading tone (A#) in the primary hook contributes to the song's breezy and non-traditional pop structure.

Lorde began outlining ideas for the project in November 2018, learning the piano to facilitate the process. Work was postponed in 2019 following the death of her dog, Pearl. The song was written with Jack Antonoff to explore themes of summer escapism and solipsism, utilizing acoustic guitar arrangements instead of the electronic production found on her previous albums.

This lead single marked a departure from the synth-pop of Melodrama, centering on breezy guitar arrangements and summer escapism. Co-produced by Jack Antonoff, it features backing vocals from Phoebe Bridgers and Clairo, anchoring Lorde's third era in a naturalistic, New Zealand-centric aesthetic.
