You Proof

The harmony in 'You Proof' is deliberately unadorned — a major-key country frame with no borrowed chords or modal color. That plainness is structural: the progression circles back on itself in a way that mirrors the lyric's premise, a thought you can't drink away no matter how many times you loop through it. Acoustic guitar as the lead timbre strips out anything that might distract from Wallen's vocal and the central hook.

Wallen wrote the song alongside Ashley Gorley, Ernest Keith Smith (performing as ERNEST), and Ryan Vojtesak (producing as Charlie Handsome). The four collaborated on a lyric that takes the cliché of drinking to forget and renders it literally: the narrator is trying to consume enough alcohol to make himself 'you proof,' immunized against the memory of a former partner. The acoustic guitar-anchored arrangement keeps the arrangement subordinate to that central conceit.

'You Proof' arrived as a promotional single on May 13, 2022 — Wallen's birthday — and became the opening statement of his third album One Thing at a Time. Built around acoustic guitar and a lyric about trying to drink a former lover out of your head, it debuted at number one on Hot Country Songs and went on to spend ten non-consecutive weeks atop Country Airplay, the longest run in that chart's history at the time. The RIAA certified it Diamond in August 2026.
