Lead Belly's recordings popularized the song widely and it became a cornerstone of the American folk-blues canon. Kurt Cobain, a lifelong admirer of Lead Belly, selected it as the closing number for Nirvana's 1993 MTV Unplugged session.

Recorded live on November 18, 1993 for MTV Unplugged in New York, Nirvana's rendition of the traditional Lead Belly song became one of rock history's most emotionally charged performances.
