Mr. Crowley

Mr. Crowley operates within natural D minor (Aeolian), but what elevates it harmonically is the classical sensibility Randy Rhoads brings to the guitar solos — diminished arpeggios, chromatic runs, and precisely articulated intervallic leaps that go well beyond standard metal vocabulary of the era. Don Airey's keyboard introduction sets an almost liturgical tone before the guitars enter, and the interplay between keyboard and guitar gives the song a textural sophistication unusual for heavy metal in 1980.

Mr. Crowley was written collaboratively by Ozzy Osbourne, guitarist Randy Rhoads, and bassist/lyricist Bob Daisley during the Blizzard of Ozz sessions at Ridge Farm Studios. It was the second single from the album, following Crazy Train, and grew organically from the dark atmosphere surrounding the recording.

Released on Ozzy Osbourne's 1980 debut solo album Blizzard of Ozz, 'Mr. Crowley' arrived as a defining statement of early heavy metal — dark, atmospheric, and technically formidable. Built around an obsession with English occultist Aleister Crowley, it fused classical-influenced guitar mastery with a bone-deep minor-key heaviness. More than four decades on, it remains one of the genre's most essential recordings.
