Phil Collins was hired in 1995 to write songs for Disney's Tarzan. Given his background as the drummer of Genesis, the production team believed his rhythmic sensibilities could lend a strong jungle beat to the film. Directors Kevin Lima and Chris Buck made the unconventional decision not to have the characters sing on screen, instead having Collins perform the songs as a narrator figure.
