Black Star

The harmonic language of 'Black Star' is characteristic of Radiohead's Bends-era writing: natural minor with heavy reliance on the flattened VII (D in E minor) as a substitute for any traditional dominant function. By refusing the V chord, the song never fully resolves — it drifts between tonic and modal neighbor chords in a way that mirrors its lyrical preoccupation with disorientation. The arrangement layers Jonny Greenwood and Ed O'Brien's guitars into interlocking parts that add textural weight without adding harmonic complexity, keeping the focus on that unresolved emotional center.

"Black Star" was composed collectively by all five members of Radiohead during the sessions that produced The Bends in 1994. The band had adopted a more communal writing process after Pablo Honey, deliberately moving away from the template of 'Creep' and distributing authorship across the full lineup. The result was a set of songs — including 'Black Star' — where interlocking guitar parts between Jonny Greenwood and Ed O'Brien were as central to the composition as the melody.

"Black Star" sits deep in the second half of The Bends (1995), where the album's anxious energy turns inward. Written collectively by all five members and co-produced by John Leckie and Nigel Godrich, it pairs a dense, layered guitar arrangement with lyrics about identity collapse and emotional estrangement.
