Don't Stop the Music

The harmonic interest derives not from chord substitutions or modulations but from the layering of electronic textures, the sampled vocal chant, and Rihanna's rhythmic delivery over the beat. This reflects Stargate's production philosophy of using harmonic simplicity as a canvas for rhythmic and timbral complexity.

The song was written and produced by Norwegian production duo Stargate (Mikkel Storleer Eriksen and Tor Erik Hermansen), with additional songwriting by Frankie Storm. Michael Jackson received a co-writing credit because the production samples his 1983 hit 'Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'', specifically the 'Mama-say, mama-sa, ma-ma-koosa' hook. When Rihanna sought clearance in 2007, Jackson reportedly approved the request without first consulting Manu Dibango, whose 1972 song 'Soul Makossa' was the original source of the chant.
