Lay Me Down

Sam Smith wrote 'Lay Me Down' as both the first song for their debut album and the first they ever composed with Jimmy Napes. Smith described it as the moment that shaped the whole project — away from aesthetics and toward raw vocal truth. In a statement released alongside the 2015 re-release, Smith said: 'This song changed my life and sent me in the direction where it was all about the voice... the soul, the voice, and the passion, and the truth.' The song grew out of personal loss and the need to put that grief somewhere real.

Released on 15 February 2013 as the lead single from In the Lonely Hour, 'Lay Me Down' was the first song Sam Smith ever wrote with collaborator Jimmy Napes — a sparse, voice-first production that set the tone for the entire album. The track had three commercial lives: a modest UK chart debut in 2014, a re-release in February 2015 that reached number 8 on the US Billboard Hot 100, and a Comic Relief version with John Legend that hit number one in the UK in March 2015.
