The genius of 'Smooth' lies in its radical harmonic simplicity: a single three-chord loop (Am–F–E7) sustains the entire song without variation. The E7 dominant seventh rather than a plain E minor adds a blues-rock edge and creates a stronger gravitational pull back to the tonic. This Andalusian-flavored cadence gives the progression its Latin character, while the relentless repetition creates a hypnotic groove that allows Santana's guitar and Thomas's vocals to carry all the melodic and dynamic interest. It's a masterclass in doing more with less.

Itaal Shur wrote the original demo track with placeholder lyrics, building the song around a Latin-flavored groove. When Arista Records head Clive Davis conceived the concept of pairing Santana with contemporary artists for a new album, Rob Thomas of Matchbox Twenty was brought in to collaborate. Thomas rewrote the lyrics entirely, crafting them as a love letter inspired by his wife Marisol. The new lyrics transformed Shur's instrumental sketch into a smoldering declaration of desire set against Santana's signature guitar tone.

"Smooth" fused Santana's fiery guitar work with Matchbox Twenty frontman Rob Thomas's soulful vocals over an irresistible three-chord Latin groove. The collaboration revived Santana's mainstream career after two decades, topped the Billboard Hot 100 for 12 weeks, and swept the 2000 Grammy Awards with three wins including Record and Song of the Year.
