Written in mid-1997 while the Spice Girls were simultaneously shooting their film Spice World, the song came out of an exhausting dual schedule. Between takes and at the end of each filming day, the group went straight into a Winnebago mobile recording studio that followed them between sets. Matt Rowe and Richard Stannard, returning from the debut album Spice (1996), worked with the group under those logistically demanding conditions. Melanie Brown later described the period in her autobiography: 'doing the two full-time jobs at the same time took its toll and within a couple of weeks, exhaustion set in.'

Released in October 1997 as the lead single from Spiceworld, 'Spice Up Your Life' debuted at the top of the UK Singles Chart and went double platinum with the BPI. Built on salsa and samba-inflected rhythms layered over punchy synths, it carried the group's message of collective uplift worldwide — even as critics divided sharply over its production and lyrics. In the US it peaked at number 18 on the Billboard Hot 100, notably below their earlier American peaks.
