In May 2010, songwriters John Martin and Michel Zitron were working in Zitron's studio in Stockholm, reminiscing about their lives, when Zitron opened up about growing up in a broken home and his parents' divorce. The chorus was taken verbatim from words spoken by Zitron's father, while the pre-chorus was inspired by the songwriters' discovery of young love, yielding the lyrics 'Upon a hill across the blue lake / That's where I had my first heartbreak.' They finished the song later that month and recorded a demo, originally intending it to launch their own electro-pop indie duo. In December 2010, Zitron sent the demo along with other tracks to Swedish House Mafia member Sebastian Ingrosso. In January 2011, while Ingrosso was in a Los Angeles studio with Axwell and Steve Angello, he called Zitron to send those demos. Upon hearing 'Don't You Worry Child,' Axwell was reportedly so moved he was nearly in tears on the studio couch. The supergroup then claimed the song and began a long production process.

Released in 2012 as the final single before Swedish House Mafia's disbandment, 'Don't You Worry Child' became the supergroup's biggest hit and a defining anthem of the EDM era. Built around a deeply personal father-son narrative and an iconic piano-driven build, the track fused emotional songwriting with festival-scale production, earning a Grammy nomination and topping charts worldwide.
