The harmonic language of 'Chop Suey!' is built on the contrast between two opposing worlds: the relentlessly minor-mode, power-chord-driven verses and the unexpectedly open, almost anthemic chorus. The i-bVI-bVII progression of the verses is a metal staple, but System of a Down weaponize it with staccato rhythmic delivery and abrupt tempo shifts that fracture the groove. The song was written by all four members of System of a Down.
