Whatever You Like

This restraint is a compositional choice, not a limitation — the unchanging harmonic backdrop lets the synth timbre, tempo, and vocal hooks carry all the emotional weight. The avoidance of a dominant chord (V or V7) keeps the progression suspended and unresolved, perfectly mirroring the song's aspirational, fantasy-like lyrical world.

"Whatever You Like" was written by T.I., David Siegel, and James Scheffer — the latter being producer Jim Jonsin's legal name. Jonsin, who had just produced Lil Wayne's chart-topping "Lollipop," constructed the track while T.I. was in the studio recording Paper Trail. The song speaks of a man of means inviting a woman to ask for anything she wants, delivered over a minimalist synthesizer-and-drum palette.

"Whatever You Like" is the crossover centerpiece of T.I.'s Paper Trail, built on cascading synthesizers, a D-minor loop, and a hook about lavishing a lover with limitless gifts. Released in July 2008, it made the biggest single-week jump in Billboard Hot 100 history, leaping from #71 to #1 in one week.
