Lavender Haze

The harmony of 'Lavender Haze' is intentionally restrained — the song's sophistication lives in its production rather than its chord vocabulary. The verse's two-chord vamp (I–IV) establishes a meditative loop that the chorus gently expands to the I–V–vi–IV cycle. This deliberate harmonic simplicity allows the layered synth textures, falsetto vocal stacking, and the deep Reese bass to become the song's true harmonic identity. The approach reflects the ambient house influence: repetition as atmosphere rather than functional harmonic movement.

Sounwave created the initial instrumental in roughly 15 minutes. While experimenting with sounds, he accidentally pressed a button that played a voice memo Jahaan Sweet had sent him — a recording of Sweet's roommate Braxton Cook singing wordless melodies over chords. Jack Antonoff, present in the same room, was captivated by the sound. Sounwave, Antonoff, Sam Dew, and Zoë Kravitz then built an R&B groove using keyboards around Cook's vocal coos, with Dew crafting the melodies and Kravitz adding sonic embellishments. Antonoff sent the track to Taylor Swift, who wrote the lyrics based on her personal life, recorded her vocals, and returned the finished song. Sounwave recalled that when Antonoff played the completed version, 'all our mouths dropped. She took it to a whole new world and made it her own.'

Opening track of Taylor Swift's Midnights (2022), 'Lavender Haze' fuses pop with ambient house, R&B, and disco into a four-on-the-floor meditation on staying in love despite public pressure. Written with Jack Antonoff, Sounwave, Jahaan Sweet, Zoë Kravitz, and Sam Dew, the song's title draws from a Mad Men phrase for the intoxicating early state of romance. Its thumping Reese bass, layered falsetto vocals, and restrained production earned critical praise and peaked at number two on charts worldwide.
