Susanna Hoffs first met Tom Kelly backstage after the Bangles' October 30, 1986 show at the Avalon Hollywood (then called the Palace). The encounter led to a writing partnership with Kelly and his regular collaborator Billy Steinberg. Their first completed song together was 'I Need a Disguise', recorded by Belinda Carlisle for her 1986 solo debut. 'Eternal Flame' followed later.
