The harmonic language is deliberately minimal — a single four-chord diatonic loop in B natural minor shared between verse and chorus. The emotional shift between sections comes not from new chords but from which chord the phrase starts on, a device that maximises the uplift of Timberlake's chorus within an accessible palette. This approachability was central to the song's crossover appeal.

The song grew directly from the emotional aftermath of the September 11 attacks. Shortly after Christmas 2001, three months after 9/11, will.i.am created a guitar loop and melodic bed in San Francisco that resonated immediately with apl.de.ap and Taboo. Taboo introduced Justin Timberlake to the group; Timberlake heard the track, connected with it, and helped write and perform the chorus. Production stalled through early 2002 as the band burned out during a tour — burnout will.i.am attributed to lingering 9/11 anxiety. The song was eventually completed and released as the lead single from Elephunk in May 2003.
