Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go

The harmony of "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go" is deliberately simple and rooted in 1950s and 1960s pop vocabulary. The I–IV shuttle in the verses evokes the jitterbug and early rock 'n' roll feel that George Michael explicitly aimed for, while the chorus expands to a classic I–vi–ii–V cycle reminiscent of Motown. There are no chromatic alterations, borrowed chords, or modulations — the song's power comes entirely from rhythmic energy and melodic hooks over an uncomplicated diatonic framework.

George Michael was inspired by a note his Wham! bandmate Andrew Ridgeley had scribbled for his parents. The note was meant to read "wake me up before you go" but Ridgeley accidentally wrote "up" twice, then deliberately doubled "go" to match. Michael saw the comic potential in the phrase and built an exuberant pop song around it, aiming to capture the best elements of 1950s and 1960s records with a contemporary uptempo energy. He demoed the track at home with just a bass line and vocal, hearing the full arrangement in his head and singing each part to the session musicians.
