Written by a ten-person collaborative group, 'Alone' was developed in the period directly following Alan Walker's breakthrough with 'Faded'. The Scandinavian pop-EDM scene ran heavily on collective writer rooms at the time, and Walker worked alongside Gunnar Greve, Marcus Arnbekk, Big Fred, vinni, Carl Hovind, Ava Max, Moa Lisa, Lovespeake, and Halvor Folstad to shape the song's lyrical and melodic core.

Released in 2016 on Norwegian label MER Musikk, 'Alone' extended Alan Walker's momentum after 'Faded' had already made him a recognisable name in European electronic music. Co-produced by Walker and Erik Smaaland, the track pairs a sweeping minor-key synth hook with a sparse vocal melody, landing squarely in the melodic EDM space Walker had defined for himself.
