"Faded" is harmonically minimal by design: a single four-chord Aeolian loop (i – VI – III – VII in A minor) repeated from first bar to last. What distinguishes it is precisely what it withholds — the dominant. By replacing the expected v or V with the subtonic VII (G major), Walker eliminates any sense of harmonic arrival or release. The track never truly 'lands', mirroring the lyric's theme of longing and displacement. The emotional weight is therefore carried by timbre and texture — the characteristic melancholic piano riff, stacked synth pads, and Solheim's breathy vocals — rather than by harmonic movement. This strategy, common in melodic house and progressive house, makes the progression highly accessible to beginner musicians while remaining compelling at scale, a key factor in the song's extraordinary streaming longevity.

"Faded" originated as a rework of Walker's 2014 instrumental track "Fade", released through NoCopyrightSounds. After "Fade" gained massive attention online with over 40 million YouTube views and 15 million Spotify streams, listeners repeatedly told Walker the track felt like it should have lyrics. Walker assembled a new songwriting team — Anders Frøen, Jesper Borgen, and Gunnar Greve — who wrote the topline and lyrics, rebuilt the track, and added piano. Walker met vocalist Iselin Solheim through Borgen and felt she was the perfect fit for the song.

"Faded" is a melancholic electronic masterpiece that reworked Walker's earlier instrumental "Fade" into a vocal-driven anthem featuring Iselin Solheim. Released in 2015, it topped charts in 18 countries, became the most Shazamed song in the world, and its music video was the first Norwegian song to reach one billion YouTube views, cementing Walker's signature blend of ethereal vocals and progressive house production.
