Summary

'Coffee & TV' stands apart in Blur's catalog as the only major single fronted by guitarist Graham Coxon, who stepped in to write and sing the lyrics after Damon Albarn couldn't finish the track. Produced by William Orbit for the 1999 album 13, Coxon turned his recovery from alcoholism into three minutes of bittersweet indie rock anchored by a deliberately discordant guitar solo improvised in a single take. Garth Jennings's animated video — following a sentient milk carton named Milky across a city — won Best Video at both the NME Awards and the MTV Europe Music Awards and became one of the most celebrated clips of the Britpop era.

Full musical analysis

The song's harmonic identity comes less from sophisticated chord choices than from the texture of their execution. Coxon's deliberately clashing voicings — minor shapes rubbing against a major center — produce a harmonic restlessness that mirrors the lyrical ambivalence of post-addiction mundanity. The guitar solo operates almost outside conventional harmony entirely: NME called it 'a string of discordant notes, building to a storm of haywire string-bending,' which Coxon himself framed as an example of how songs 'develop like photographs' and eventually cannot be changed. Link Wray and Yo La Tengo are the named touchstones; the result is closer to controlled noise than to any textbook progression.

During the sessions for 13, Damon Albarn — Blur's usual lead vocalist — was struggling to complete the song. Guitarist Graham Coxon stepped in, writing and singing the lyrics himself. He drew directly from his own experience of giving up drinking: the daily routine of watching television, making coffee, and writing songs that replaced alcohol became the skeleton of the track. Coxon later described the song as being about 'the idea that you feel like a piece of shit in a crap job, and you want to marry someone and get away from it all.'
