Damon Albarn originally recorded an acoustic demo of the song at a slower tempo, with the distinctive 'woo-hoo' chorus rendered as a whistle. Graham Coxon then suggested they dramatically increase the speed and play it as loudly as possible, deliberately seeking out an amateurish, abrasive guitar sound. The band intended the track as a provocation aimed at their record label, expecting executives to be appalled. Coxon told Albarn to present it to the label as their desired single to 'blow the flipping record labels' heads off.' To the band's complete surprise, the executives loved it.
