Sandstorm

Harmonically, 'Sandstorm' is deliberately minimalist — its power derives not from chord complexity but from the relentless escalation of a simple E minor framework. The i–VII movement avoids authentic cadences entirely, generating a sense of perpetual forward motion ideally suited to dancefloor use. The Roland JP-8080 synth patches and layered arpeggios create textural richness that compensates for the intentional harmonic simplicity, a strategy that became definitive for the commercial trance genre.

In September and October 1999, Finnish DJ Ville Virtanen — performing as Darude — began collaborating with producer Jaakko 'JS16' Salovaara, known for his work with the Bomfunk MC's. 'Sandstorm' was the first product of their partnership, completed after roughly a week of work. JS16 subsequently signed Darude as the first artist on his newly founded label 16 Inch Records.

Released in Finland on 26 October 1999, 'Sandstorm' is an instrumental trance track by Darude (Ville Virtanen) that conquered charts in Norway and Canada, earned RIAA platinum certification in the US, and became one of the most universally recognized electronic dance records ever made. Its hypnotic ascending synth riff and pounding kick drum made it a fixture in sports arenas worldwide and one of the defining anthems of the early 2000s trance era. In 2025, Billboard ranked it #65 on 'The 100 Best Dance Songs of All Time.'
